Understand the fundamentals
Follow the supply at a high level
A facility carries electricity to its miners through a chain of equipment. The chain can include switchgear, panels, protective devices such as breakers, and power distribution units (PDUs). Switchgear is large equipment that controls and protects major parts of the supply. Along the way, the supply is split into smaller circuits, called branch circuits, that feed particular loads. A PDU shares power out to the loads connected to it. Cords and connectors carry power the last step to the miner’s power supply. The exact arrangement depends on the site’s electrical design.

A protective device is built to cut power when certain faults happen, such as too much current. A breaker trip is an event to investigate under the site procedure. It is not a signal to keep resetting the breaker. Report it, and leave any reset to authorized personnel. Also, a breaker that has not tripped does not prove that every connection, temperature and operating condition is fine.

Ratings belong to a complete arrangement
Voltage, current, temperature, connector and installation requirements all have to fit together. One part’s printed rating does not tell you how much spare capacity the whole circuit has. Decisions about loading (how much equipment a circuit feeds), protection and distribution need a proper electrical design. Authorized personnel make those decisions.
Adapters, extension cords and “nearly matching” cords can change the arrangement the site designed. Find the supported part and the approved procedure. Do not build a power path from whatever physically fits. If you see heat damage, such as melted or discolored plastic, stop and report it. Do not reseat (unplug and plug back in) the connection yourself.
Connect it to the field
Example: report the event without creating another one
Suppose a group of miners loses power, and the monitoring system shows they all failed at the same time. Record which assets are affected, where they are, the time and anything you can observe safely. Check approved records for planned work or curtailment. Curtailment means reducing or stopping electrical load on purpose. Escalate any physical electrical investigation to the responsible team.
A useful report does not claim that every PSU failed. It does not ask for an immediate reset without context. Instead, it states which equipment is affected and asks the responsible team to confirm the condition of the shared supply. A clear, traceable record helps tell a facility event apart from separate hardware failures.
Terms used in this lesson
- Branch circuit
- A smaller circuit, split off from the main supply, that feeds particular loads.
- Protective device
- A device that cuts power when certain faults happen, such as too much current. A breaker is one example.
- Rating
- A limit or capability that applies under stated conditions. It is not a target to push past.
