Three failure states techs mix up - dead, offline, no-pool - and how to isolate each by layer instead of swapping good hardware.
Dead, offline, and no-pool all look the same on a dashboard: a miner not earning. The root cause is different for each. Name the state right before you touch anything.
| State | On network | Hashing | Root cause |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead / hashboard 0 | Yes (reachable) | No / partial | Hardware: board or PSU |
| Offline / unreachable | No | Maybe (unknown) | Link / IP / switch / VLAN |
| Pool disconnected | Yes (reachable) | Yes, no pool | Cannot reach stratum |
The first fork is simple: can you open the miner's own web UI or pull an IP-report? That one answer sorts most tickets.
Do not jump to the pool or the hardware. Localize the break one layer at a time, lowest layer first.
Every layer that checks out narrows the fault to what is left above it.
| Layer clears | Rules out | Points at |
|---|---|---|
| Link + port up | Cabling, switch port | IP or above |
| IP + DNS good | Addressing, resolution | Egress or pool |
| Egress open | Firewall / port block | The pool itself |
